Of course I'd like to see more of the usual uptown amenities like art galleries, cool restaurants and music venues but there are some things Uptown Greensboro needs more. So if you're thinking of starting a small business somewhere in the Uptown, please consider the following;
Manufacturing. Nothing employes people like manufacturing. Manufacturing is what built this city and until we're able to return to a local manufacturing based economy we can expect to continue to struggle economically. Sure, insurance, banking, pharmaceutical, data centers, transportation and others are all great money makers but every city in the world is chasing the same targets and most, including Greensboro, will never catch enough. What's that? You need ideas for products that aren't being made by the Chinese? I've got dozens and would love to share my ideas with people who can make them happen. But not on the Internet-- the Chinese might be reading too.
A garden center that caters to backyard gardeners, hydroponics, vertical gardening, container gardening and backyard poultry.
We could sure use another grocery store-- especially in or near the northeast corner of the Uptown.
A glass recycler as there are none in Greensboro. Yes, the city does accept glass bottles but no one in Greensboro recycles plate glass. A privately owned glass recycling business could do both and there's more than enough money in cullet to afford buying glass from the public, converting it to cullet (stupidly simple) and reselling it to glass manufacturers.
Someone who sells and installs wood pellet stoves and furnaces. Or any other kind of waste to energy product. The waste is here.
Tiny houses for those of you who seem to think building is the only way to fuel a local economy.
A book store would be a welcome addition but in today's economic environment that might be dreaming.
A retailer that concentrates and sources the closest available goods-- a local store.
More later!!!
