Here's another Uptown Greensboro landmark found on East Market St at NC A&T University. It's the smoke stack from the TE Neil Heating Plant where water is heated for steam heat and hot water. Click on the photo to enlarge.

Aycock Cafe

Here's an Uptown landmark and a view most photographers never catch. Nicknamed the Aycock Cafe by the teens who eat there, it's really the cafeteria at Aycock Middle School just off of East Bessemer Ave on Cypress Street. It's without a doubt, one of the oldest buildings in the Uptown and brings back all sorts of horrid memories of the awful foods served to myself and other alumni of Aycock Jr High School.

Aycock Middle School was named for North Carolina Governor, Charles B Aycock who, while generally thought of as a great education proponent, was also in-part responsible for the Wilmington Massacre in 1898 before being elected governor 1901-1905.

Revolution Mill Water Tank

What was once Cone Mills, Revolution Mill, stands to the northwest of Uptown Greensboro. The textile machines and textile workers have been replaced with offices, office workers, studios and artists but the red water tower and smoke stacks remain an Uptown landmark even if it is a few hundred feet outside the Uptown.

Uptown doesn't have a lot of the things most people consider to be landmarks-- maybe a few new landmarks should be added to the agenda at Uptown Greensboro Inc?

World War Memorial Stadium

The Uptown's War Memorial Stadium is a long standing Greensboro landmark. Built in 1926 as a tribute to those service men and women who served in the first World War, the stadium was originally intended to be a football stadium. Later, the Greensboro Patriots and other minor league baseball teams would call War Memorial home.

Sadly, the stadium has long since been neglected by the City of Greensboro and has fallen into a sad state of disrepair. While listed in National Register of Historic Places, the eventual fate of this Uptown landmark is unknown.

New Breed Of Tree Discovered In Uptown Greensboro

The Fairview Shopping Center on the corner of 4th Street and Fairview Street (Google map) is home to one of the most unusual trees we've ever seen. From across the street it looks like any other old tree but when you get a bit closer things start getting weird. Click on the photographs to zoom in.

When you walk around to the other side you will find an opening. A hollow tree? Move in a little closer.

Closer still and things get strange.

The tree is filled, top to bottom, with concrete blocks. Sure, someone put them there but how? Why? And when?

A note to whoever does the landscape maintenance for the Fairview Shopping Center: These bushes and that vine growing up the tree are Poison Ivy.
