Getting Around Greensboro

For those of you who own a car, the hardest part of getting around Greensboro may be finding a parking spot near the door but for those persons who don't own a car or feel the need to use less gasoline, getting around Greensboro can be tough. We hope the following information helps you get where you're going.

Bicycling As Transportation
Greensboro has lots of recreational bicycle trails but when it comes to getting from point A to points B, C and D, riding the trails usually isn't an option. And while the City of Greensboro does allow bicyclists to ride on sidewalks, in the Uptown, sidewalks are few and far between. A Greensboro Bicycle Map is available online but it's so hard to see on a computer screen that I recommend bicyclists call 336-373-CITY (2489) and ask how to get a paper copy.

Walk-Score
Walk scores range 0-100 with 100 being the most walkable. Not all of the Uptown is in the 27405 Zip Code but since most of the area is in the 27405 Zip Code I decided to use 27405 as a base line to compare the Uptown with other Greensboro neighborhoods. The Uptown is Car-Dependent with a walk score of 45. The overall Walk-Score for the entire City of Greensboro is 39. Greensboro's most walkable neighborhoods are 27402, 27403 and 27408 with scores of 69, 57 and 51 respectively.

Walk scores are important because cities with high walk scores are generally denser, enjoy less sprawl, have higher per capita incomes and are considered good places to start new businesses. People who live in walkable communities weigh less. The air is cleaner as 82% of CO2 emissions come from car exhaust. Cars are the second largest household expense. Houses in areas with high walk score are more valuable. As a matter of fact: increasing a walk score by 1 point increases your home value by $3,000.

Greensboro Transit Authority
Many people find GTA routing to be confusing but if you study the routing long enough you can usually get where you want to go. Routes 6, 10, 14 and 15 all serve Uptown Greensboro though odds are good you'll need to change buses somewhere along the way. Riding more than one bus sometimes requires paying double fares unless you purchase multi-day passes in advance or transfer at the appropriate stops. Current fares and passes can be found here. Transfers here.

Good luck.
