Auracanas

No one knows for sure how many chickens live in Uptown Greensboro but the sounds of roosters crowing on my block take me back to my childhood when chickens and even dairy cows were my uptown neighbors. While there are regulations barring roosters in Greensboro, some Uptown residents are grandfathered in as they kept chickens even before regulations existed. The rooster, front and center in this first photo, is an Auracana who lives in the Uptown.

The unusual looking hen to the back is a Turken and that's how she's supposed to look. While some breeds of chickens have roosters and hens with similar plumage, Auracanas aren't one of them. This is an Auracana hen who lives in the Uptown.

Auracanas are unique in that they're one of the few breeds that lay eggs in various shades of green like the light green egg in the photograph below.

If you think you'd like to keep chickens in the Uptown, call 336-373-CITY (2489) and have them tell you how the laws apply to you.
